Refinishing hardwood floors is something that many people want to do as soon as they purchase their homes, while others watch their floors slowly go from pristine to worn over time. No matter which group you belong to, getting your floors properly sanded before refinishing is crucial to ensuring that the new stain adheres properly and that you are going to get the results that you are hoping to achieve. Here at Zack Hardwood Flooring, we are here to help you with every step of the refinishing process, including letting you know what exactly happens during the sanding process.
For many people, they are surprised at the sequence of sandpaper grit that we use when it comes to refinishing. For older floors, we might go over the floors as many as seven to ten different times with different grades of sandpaper grit! Sandpaper needs to start out very coarse in order to remove old stain and polyurethane, and then the sandpaper becomes progressively finer. However, we don’t want to make our last grit superfine like you would with woodworking- you want the stain to find some very tiny notches to lodge within and give your stain depth.
The process of sanding usually involves a drum sander and a few different rotary sanders as well as palm sanders. This is done to remove the largest areas first and then work the perimeter with the smaller sanders.
