Considerations When Replacing Your Floors

Are you considering replacing your hardwood, carpet, tile or vinyl floors? If so, there are a few things you should know beforehand to be able to consider all of your options and ensure you have a smooth and budget-friendly experience. Through this article, we’ll dive deeper into the logistics of replacing your floors, from the initial idea to the finished product.

Steps to Take to Replace Your Floors

  1. Initial idea. Whether your floors are worn out and are in desperate need of replacing or you simply want to change up the style or material in your home, you’ve had the thought of replacing your floors. Now it’s time to turn that thought into action.
  2. Do your research. Research is important as there are many different flooring options, styles, and installation companies. Begin this process by researching the different flooring types you are considering, what the current trends are, and the time, cost, and investment that goes into replacing your floors.
  3. Determine your budget. Once you have an idea of what rooms in your home are getting new floors, the type of floors you are considering and companies you are interested in hiring (or if you are DIY’ing), it’s time to determine your budget. The cost of flooring is variable and relies on a number of different factors. You can use this budget guide to get a rough estimate of what to account for. As with any sound budget, be sure to consider adding an additional 10% to your total budget to accommodate for any price changes or setbacks that may occur.
  4. Have a consultation. Now that you know what you want and how much you can spend, it’s time to visit your local flooring company and have a consultation. This is the perfect time to see your flooring options in person, talk about the service they provide and get a more accurate quote for your project. Typically, you’ll meet with a sales representative who can answer all of your questions and walk you through the installation process.
  5. Shop around. Don’t limit yourself to getting a quote from just one company. Visit at least two or three showrooms in order to do some comparison shopping. Compare what each company can offer you, what the total cost of the project is, and the overall customer experience. Pricing can change daily and quotes are only valid for a certain timeframe, so it’s important to shop around in a timely manner.
  6. Book your service. After weighing out what each company has to offer, it’s time to book your service! Typically, you’ll receive an invoice itemizing all the details that are included in the project, including the cost of time, labor, materials, removal of old flooring and more. It should also indicate when the project should begin and approximately how long it should take to complete.
  7. Project begins. The crew will arrive on-site and begin replacing your floors, per the contract.
  8. Project completed. Hooray! You have new floors. Flooring is a long-term investment. In order to keep them in excellent condition, be sure to clean and care for your floors often.
