Install vs Refinish Hardwood Flooring

Install New Floors vs Refinish Existing Floors

Is it better to either install the new hardwood flooring or refinish the existing one?

Well, it depends on the different factors. Age would be the determining factor whether to install or refinish the existing hardwood floor. The condition is another important factor to be considered. If the hardwood floor is warped, bended or distorted, it definitely needs to be replaced. Your budget will also determine your choice.

Let us consider in what detail what you must go for:

Installation or refinishing?

1. Budget:
First things first, you must consider your own budget. You must carry out the installation if you can afford it or vice versa.

2. If the Condition is Really Bad:
Let us say if the existing hardwood floor is really old and in bad shape, you must get the new floors. However, there will be additional costs attached to the estimated project price. The contractor will charge for the ripping up, removing and cleaning of the existing hardwood floor. So, you can make a do with a simple hardwood floor which costs you less. Otherwise, you can save up for the project. Then, you can easily go for the installation of new floors as refinishing cannot be done.

3. If Refinished A Great Many Times:
If your existing hardwood floor has been refinished a great many times, there is no way another finishing would fix it – It will look old. Old floors have scratched dents, tongues and cracks all over the surface area. If your floor has been refinished at least 5 times, you fall in this category. In this case, you must go for the installation of the new hardwood floors.

4. If You Desire a New Design, Color or Direction:
If you are desiring to get a new width, direction or the color of the floor, the only way to obtain is to get new floors. Nowadays, the wider planks are in trends. So, you can go for wider planks or wider strips.

5. Having Old Floor Design:
You must change floors to the new floor if you have parquet design floor. Parquet design is really out of fashion. Parquet design of floor also makes the room look smaller given the smaller squares of the floor.  You can go for long strips or long planks that will give room an enhanced and larger look.

6. If You Have No Time:
If you want the project to get completed in less amount of time, you must go for installation of new floors. Refinishing consumes a lot of time and energies of the homeowners. Refinishing becomes a huge challenge especially when you have furniture everywhere placed in the house. Refinishing is also a nightmare as most people are allergic to the smell and cannot bear the noises all day long. So, installation of the new floors will take significantly less amount of time.

You can also go for prefinished hardwood floors installation, as they would make the installation process a quicker process.

Conclusion:

You must consider your own personal choices, personal liking and personal favorites before considering above mentioned factors.
