How To DIY Install Hardwood Floor?

Installation of hardwood floors is a hefty and huge investment, which can be reduced to half. If you have the basic skills of a carpenter, you can also install the hardwood floor and get done with the project on your own.

1. Choosing the Hardwood Material

First of all, you will have to make the important decision: what kind of hardwood material should be chosen? You can choose from oak, maple, bamboo, ash, cherry, rosewood, hickory, lyptus, walnut and other types available in your local market.

2. Measurement of the Room

Next, you must take measurements of the room – width and the length. Then, you must multiply the width and length for obtaining the square footage. Note: You must order 10-15% extra wood in case you cut too small or rough.

3. Inspection and Examination of the Sub-Floor

Now, you must inspect and examine the subfloor. The minimal requirement is ¾ plywood subfloor, which should not be squeaky or damaged. If there are squeaks into the floor, you must repair it with a long drywall screw and later joist it. Then, the subfloor must be cleaned, swept and mopped properly.

4. Spreading Vapor Barrier Paper

You must at least roll out 4” overlap and staple tightly and securely on the subfloor. You may also use 15 pounds of tar or felt, which is really an inexpensive solution. 

5. Starting Installation of the Process

You must begin the installation of the process near the longer wall that receives lower traffic. You must remove the shoe-molding, and must snap a chalk line 3/8 out from the baseboard.

6. Placement of the Boards

Now, it is time to place the boards on the plywood of the subfloor. You must place the board perfectly aligned with the chalk line, and drill the pilot holes into the hardwood planks. The hardwood planks must be drilled into the sub-floor and joist. You must face-nail each board on the joist points, and set the nail on the board with a nail set. It is really very important to nail the first-row near the wall.

7. Hand-Nails the Rolls

You have to hand-nail the rolls in the first few rows. You must drill the pilot holes down into the tongue of the boards, and hand-nail the rolls. You must hand-nail until there is enough clearance for the pneumatic nail gun.

8. Stapling the Boards

Now, you must staple the boards by placing the lip at the lower edge of the boards and striking it firmly into the tongue of the hardwood board.

9. Working on the Floors Finely:

Cutting Baseboards, Hand-Nailing and Filling Holes

As you will proceed furthermore, you will need to cut baseboards finally, hand-nail the boards as you reach the opposite walls and fill holes of the baseboards with wood putty.

10. Maintaining the Hardwood Floor

If you used a prefinished hardwood floors, you will easily maintain it with grits. Later, you must clean it with hardwood floor cleaning agents, vacuum and sweeping.
